1. Seabiscuit

 

A 2003 American sports movie based on the 1999 non-fiction book “Seabiscuit: An American Legend” by Laura Hillenbrand.

The movie is loosely based on the life of Seabiscuit, a champion thoroughbred racehorse. Seabiscuit stars Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges.

Stream it on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video. Fair warning, you’ll need a lot of tissues for this one. It’s a real tearjerker!

 

 

2. War Horse

A 2011 American war movie based on the 1982 British war novel “War Horse” by Michael Morpurgo.

The movie is about the life of Joey, a farm horse who was purchased by the British Army during World War I.

War Horse stars Jeremy Irvine, Peter Mullan, and Emily Watson. Like Seabiscuit, it really tugs the heartstrings, so you’ll want to keep those tissues handy again.

3. The Horse Whisperer

If you’re looking for a heartwarming flick for family movie night with your older teens, you can’t go wrong with The Horse Whisperer.

Be warned, this movie will take you on an emotional rollercoaster!

A 1998 American Western drama movie based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Nicholas Evans.

The movie tells the story of Tom Booker, a talented trainer with an uncanny knack for understanding horses.

Tom helps teenager Grace MacLean and her horse, Pilgrim, after a horrific accident.

The Horse Whisperer stars Robert Redford (who also directed the film) and Scarlett Johansson.

Unfortunately, this one isn’t currently streaming on subscription services, but you can rent it from Vudu, Google Play, iTunes and on Amazon.

4. Dreamer: Inspired By A True Story

A 2005 American sports drama movie inspired by the true story of Mariah’s Storm, a thoroughbred racehorse who suffered and overcame a serious racing injury.

Dreamer is a wonderful movie for teens that love horses and families. It will warm your heart as the characters overcome seemingly impossible challenges.

Don’t be shocked if you shed a few tears!

5. Hidalgo

A 2004 American biographical, Western movie based on the real-life story of Frank Hopkins, a professional horseman, and his horse, Hidalgo, a mustang.

If you love the history of the American Wild West and horses, you should definitely check out this. You will definitely be rooting for the main character during this one!

6. National Velvet

A 1944 American Technicolor sports movie based on the 1935 novel “National Velvet” by Enid Bagnold.

National Velvet is a beautiful classic and family movie.

The movie tells the story of Velvet Brown, a 12-year-old girl who trains her horse for the Grand National horse race.

It’s perfect for those little girls who dream of having their own horse.

National Velvet stars Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney, and Donald Crisp. Unfortunately, this movie isn’t available to stream, but you can rent or buy it at iTunes, Google Play, and Microsoft.

7. Secretariat

Be prepared to have those tissues at the ready. Secretariat will take you through the highs and lows of the amazing horse’s life.

A 2010 American biographical, sports, drama movie based on the 1975 book “Secretariat: The Making of a Champion” by William Nack.

The movie showcases the life of Secretariat, the thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1973 Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes & Belmont Stakes).

8. The Black Stallion

A 1979 American adventure movie based on the 1941 classic children’s novel “The Black Stallion” by Walter Farley.

A classic family movie that I was obsessed with growing up. Your horse mad kids will love this one!

The movie focuses on Alec Ramsey, who is first stranded on a deserted island with a wild Arabian black stallion and then later trains him for racing.

The Black Stallion stars Kelly Reno and Mickey Rooney. You can watch this movie for free on PlutoTV, stream it with a Hoopla subscription or rent it at iTunes, Google Play, and Prime Video.

9. Buck

A 2011 American documentary movie based on the real-life tale of Buck Brannaman, an American horse trainer.

This is a movie for adults that love horses and want to learn more about Buck’s beautiful training methods. You will definitely have some heartwarming moments.

Brannaman was “one of the world’s leading practitioners of handling horses based on classical concepts from the California vaquero tradition.”

The documentary stars Buck and his family, along with Robert Redford (all playing themselves).

10. Flicka

A 2006 American family, adventure, drama movie loosely based on the 1941 children’s novel “My Friend Flicka” by Mary O’Hara.

If you want a horse theme family movie night option, I think this is a great one. Get your popcorn ready and find a comfy spot on the couch!

The movie was the inspiration for “My Friend Flicka,” a Western television series that aired for 39 episodes from 1956-1957.

Flicka stars Alison Lohman, Tim McGraw and Maria Bello.

11. Racing Stripes

Racing Stripes is a 2005 American sports, family, comedy movie. The movie showcases the tale of Stripes, an abandoned traveling circus zebra who dreams of becoming a racehorse.

Racing Stripes stars Bruce Greenwood and Hayden Panettiere and features the voices of Frankie Muniz and Mandy Moore.

12. Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron

A 2002 American animated, adventure movie, Spirit is perfect for family movie night.

It tells the story of Spirit, a Kiger mustang stallion who was initially captured by the United States Cavalry during the American Indian Wars.

He is eventually freed by Little Creek, a Native American man.

Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron features the voices of Matt Damon, James Cromwell, and Daniel Studi.

13. Black Beauty

A 1994 drama movie based on the 1877 novel “Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions,  the Autobiography of a Horse” by Anna Sewell.

The movie is told from the perspective of Black Beauty, referred to as a well-bred horse. You can expect to find yourself getting weepy as Black Beauty takes you through his life.

Besides the 1994 film, the novel has also been adapted into 7 other films, a television series (1972-1974), a 1978 mini-series, and a 2011 stage play.

Black Beauty stars Sean Bean and features the voice of Alan Cumming.
