A 2003 American sports movie based on the 1999 non-fiction book “Seabiscuit: An American Legend” by Laura Hillenbrand.

The is one of the best horse movies on Netflix. It is loosely based on the life of Seabiscuit, a champion thoroughbred. He is one of the greatest race horses of all time. Seabiscuit stars Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges.

Stream it on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video. Fair warning, you’ll need a lot of tissues for this one. It’s a real tearjerker!

2. War Horse


A 2011 American war movie based on the 1982 British war novel “War Horse” by Michael Morpurgo.

The movie is about the life of Joey, a farm horse who was purchased by the British Army during World War I.

War Horse stars Jeremy Irvine, Peter Mullan, and Emily Watson. Like Seabiscuit, it really tugs the heartstrings, so you’ll want to keep those tissues handy again.

3. The Horse Whisperer

If you’re looking for a heartwarming flick for family movie night with your older teens, you can’t go wrong with The Horse Whisperer.

Be warned, this movie will take you on an emotional rollercoaster!

A 1998 American Western drama movie based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Nicholas Evans.

The movie tells the story of Tom Booker, a talented trainer with an uncanny knack for understanding horses.

Tom helps teenager Grace MacLean and her horse, Pilgrim, after a horrific accident.

The Horse Whisperer stars Robert Redford (who also directed the film) and Scarlett Johansson.

Unfortunately, this one isn’t currently streaming on subscription services, but you can rent it from Vudu, Google Play, iTunes and on Amazon.

A 2005 American sports drama movie inspired by the true story of Mariah’s Storm, a thoroughbred racehorse who suffered and overcame a serious racing injury.

Dreamer is a wonderful movie for teens that love horses and families. It will warm your heart as the characters overcome seemingly impossible challenges.

5. Hidalgo

A 2004 American biographical, Western movie based on the real-life story of Frank Hopkins, a professional horseman, and his horse, Hidalgo, a mustang.

The movie focuses on Alec Ramsey, who is first stranded on a deserted island with a wild Arabian black stallion and then later trains him for racing.

A 2011 American documentary movie based on the real-life tale of Buck Brannaman, an American horse trainer.

Brannaman was “one of the world’s leading practitioners of handling horses based on classical concepts from the California vaquero tradition.”

The documentary stars Buck and his family, along with Robert Redford (all playing themselves).

A 1994 drama movie based on the 1877 novel “Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions,  the Autobiography of a Horse” by Anna Sewell.

The movie is told from the perspective of Black Beauty, referred to as a well-bred horse. You can expect to find yourself getting weepy as Black Beauty takes you through his life.

Besides the 1994 film, the novel has also been adapted into 7 other films, a television series (1972-1974), a 1978 mini-series, and a 2011 stage play.

Black Beauty stars Sean Bean and features the voice of Alan Cumming.
