I grew up with a love of horses, but unfortunately, I had little contact with them. I rode a few times at summer camps and always wanted to do more.
When I was nine, I started experiencing minor heart health issues, but they always resolved quickly.
At the age of 12, I finally had the opportunity to start riding Western at a beginner barn. I loved it, and I rode for a year until my heart issues came back worse than before.
I couldn’t even stand up without serious issues, let alone ride a horse. But even though I couldn’t ride, I spent my time reading horse books and watching movies about them.
I researched everything I could and finally had surgery that allowed me to become active again when I was 14.
When I got back to riding, I switched to an English riding barn to learn to jump, following my friend who had also switched. I never thought I’d enjoy English riding, but I loved it!
I met my heart horse while riding there, a crazy 16hh grey OTTB gelding named Winged Hero, or Hero for short.
My new trainer was the one who introduced me to Hero, and she’s been pushing me harder than my previous trainer.
I’ve had many falls, one of which caused some pretty bad back problems, but my trainer helped me gain back my confidence.
Now, I’m working under her to pay off Hero’s board and lessons by exercising horses, cleaning, and feeding them.
My boy’s name is Winged Hero, AKA Hero. He’s 15 years old and flea-bitten grey. He’s off the track and acts like it!
He’s speedy and loves to jump. He and I are currently competing in the 2′ divisions, but we’re moving up to the 2’6″ next month. We’re part of the SWDEA show series, and we love every minute of it.
The Marguerite Henry books, King of the Wind, and the Black Stallion series inspired me greatly. I loved watching movies about girls who meet their heart horses and form special bonds with them.
Now, my biggest dream is to open an equine-assisted therapy program to help children who have special needs, just like my adopted siblings. I believe it’s the right path for me.
If anyone wants to find me, I only have Facebook, and I don’t post much other than pictures of Hero and me.
You can find me at Kolya Cogan. If you see pictures of a beautiful grey horse, that’s my account.
You also won’t want to miss out on the incredible story of Stormy Diamond – it’s a must-read for anyone seeking inspiration and a reminder that anything is possible!
