8 Best Horse Riding Helmet Visors (Reviews)

Equestrian helmet visors provide riders protection from the sun. Wide brims give shade to your face and some help block out UV rays. If you spend a lot of time riding in the sun, they are a must have piece of equipment.

#1 Intrepid International Equivisor Helmet Visor

Intrepid International Equivisor Helmet Visor

The Intrepid Equivisor has to be my favorite helmet visor for horse riding. It is one of the options available that is specifically designed for an equestrian riding hat.

The brim not only helps keep the sun out of your eyes it extends along the side protecting your ears and the side of your face. It is secured with velcro closure. The closure has a good amount of adjustability, so it will fit a wide range of riding hat sizes.

If you want your horse helmet visor to blend in with your hat, you will like that this product comes in black. However, if you want a little variety it also comes in denim, jute, and brown.

One feature I really like is that in addition to the velcro closure, it also has internal grips on the straps to help keep it in place when you are riding at speed.

I tried one of these that my friend owns and found it did a great job and it was really easy to take on and off my helmet.

Features & Attributes

  • Velcro closure
  • Gripping system
  • Four color options

  • 4-inch wide tapered brim
  • One size

How it Compares to Others and Why

This is one of the few sun visors that are made just for horse riding helmets. It is a little expensive for what it is but not crazy expensive.

Expert Tips

This is a great sun protection option however if you want to use it in windy weather, you will need to find a way to secure it better otherwise it could come off.

#2 Troxel Helmet Brimmer

troxel helmet brimmer

The Troxel helmet brimmer comes from one of the most popular riding hat brands. While all equestrians will love the protection it provides from the sun, this visor is in the style of a cowboy hat brim.

This makes it most suitable for western riders.

It has a special attachment system, which means it won’t come off your riding helmet. For what it is, it is a little expensive but it is of good quality.

Features & Attributes

  • Palm leaf brim
  • Special attachments to prevent it coming off

How it Compares to Others and Why

This is a western riding style helmet sun visor while the others are neutral or aimed at English riders. It is also limited to only certain helmet models, whereas some of the others will fit most hat.

Expert Tips

The Troxel brimmer is made with plain tan palm leaf. However, you can dress it up by adding your own personal touch. For some color try adding a wide ribbon or bandana. When putting the brimmer on your hat, Troxel recommends that you “push down the front of the Helmet Brimmer™ from the top side until the Helmet Brimmer™ touches the helmet visor” [1]

The Soless helmet visor is a popular option with many equestrians. One of its key features is its lightweight mesh visor that filters sunlight and blocks most UV rays without affecting your vision.

No more squinting or irritated eyes from riding in the sun.

Compared to the others in this guide the Soless is the most expensive. However, it is the lightest and the only visor option with a mesh helmet brim. Horse owners that have tried this helmet brim have given me lots of positive feedback.

Expert Tips

Expert equestrian product tester, Colleen Peachey, was so excited when she tried the Soless visor and found that it “can even be worn without your helmet” She also says ” I treat it carefully, as I would a pair of sunglasses, in order to prevent scratching the polycarbonate film.” [2]

#5 OccuNomix Blue CottonTwill Hard Hat Shade Neck Protector

OccuNomix Blue CottonTwill Hard Hat Shade Neck Protector

The OccuNomix isn’t specifically designed for horse riding helmets, however, it will work with many of them. You will need to give it a try to see if it fits your helmet.

I really like how it has a flap that covers your neck. If it fits your riding hat, the helmet brim will provide support to the front visor.

Features & Attributes

  • Comes in khaki, navy, white, or fluorescent yellow
  • Made of cotton

This helmet sun visor is made for hard hats but not equestrian helmets so while it will work for some and is a great budget option it won’t suit all models.

Expert Tips

If this visor fits your helmet, you will need a way to secure it so it stays on when you are riding. A good idea is to use zip ties to attach it. I find zip ties are a solution to just about anything!

What to Look for When Buying Horse Riding Helmet Visors?

When buying a horse riding helmet visor there are a few things to consider to ensure you get the right one.

Type of Attachment

Look at the type of attachment the helmet visor has. Is it a permanent or temporary attachment? If it’s permanent it is more likely to stay in place, however, you won’t be able to take it off if you don’t want to use it.

Also, when you do take it off, you will no longer be able to use it and it could damage the surface of your helmet.

Riding Environment

What type of conditions do you usually ride in? Are you purely a trail rider? Or do you spend most of your time riding in the arena? If you ride at speed, you will want a visor that attaches more securely so it doesn’t fly off.

Some models have the option to add extra parts that help secure the visor. If you’re going to spend a lot of time riding in the wind or cantering, then you’ll want a visor with this capability.

FAQs

Here I’ve answered some of the questions I often hear from riders looking for a visor for their riding helmets. Let’s take a look.

Is a helmet visor is necessary for horse riding?

No, a helmet visor is not necessary for horse riding. Many people find that the peak of the helmet does enough to keep the sun out of their eyes.
However, if you spend a lot of time riding in very hot and sunny areas, then you will really appreciate putting a visor on your helmet.

Can you show with a riding helmet brimmer?

Whether you can show with a riding helmet brimmer will depend on your association’s rules. Cowboy hat brimmers are usually allowed when competing.
However, a cowboy brimmer would never be accepted at an English horse show.

What is the difference between a helmet visor and a helmet brimmer?

The difference between a helmet visor and a helmet brimmer is that a visor is similar to the hat’s peak but it is wider and provides more coverage, while a brimmer is in the shape of a cowboy hat.
